Chapter 5: Breakthrough

The days passed as they do. Miriam was not sure how long they stayed at the old house. Ray and Mallory came and stayed a few days at a time but they left Jerry and her alone most of the time.

They spent at least fifty or sixty hours a week in study and mental practice. Jerry told her she was making progress but she could not tell.

She was trying to catch up on her school studies in addition to her mental exercises.

There had been no word of her friends. She was very worried about them.

They were sitting, facing each other on an exercise mat. She was practicing making a wall around her thoughts for what had to be the thousandth time.

“Concentrate on building a wall around yourself.” Jerry told her. “A wall no voice can penetrate.”

“I’m visualizing a wall.” She told him. “It is a solid stone wall.”

“Good.” He told her. “Now make it stronger. Imagine it’s built of the hardest thing you know.”

“It is coated with diamonds,” She murmured, eyes closed. “That’s the hardest thing I know.”

“Make sure the floor and ceiling are the same,” He said, “Nothing can get in or out.”

“I’m trying. It just does not seem to be working.”

“It takes time.” He said. Something they both knew they did not have.

“You have to truly believe in yourself.” Jerry told her. “I know you can do this. It may take months, but you will do it. Keep trying.”

“I’m trying. I see a wall.” She said, “The voices are beating on it to get in. I am making it stronger. It is getting thicker. It’s …” Miriam gasped and blinked, in shock.

“What is it?” Jerry asked, anxiously.

“They are gone. The voices are gone!” She whispered.

Her ears were ringing from the deafening silence. The voices had been with her for so long, she almost cried out in anguish at their loss. She wanted them gone but their loss was disconcerting. She went through several stages of emotion in a short time.

She opened her eyes and looked at Jerry, sitting across from her. She was so happy that she lost her image of the imaginary wall. The voices slammed into her head with thunderous force. She could not believe it. She was despondent and crestfallen.

“Miriam?” Jerry asked, watching her face.

“The voices went away as long as I concentrated on keeping the wall. When I stopped thinking about the wall, it disappeared and the voices came back louder than ever,” She told him.

“It’s a breakthrough!” He told her. “You did stop them for a while. That’s good.” He told her. “We just have to keep practicing. You’ll get to the point where you can hold it without thinking.”
